Lampertheim (dpa / lrs) – Deutsche Bahn is starting in southern Hesse with preparatory work for the planned new line between Frankfurt and Mannheim. Between the beginning of September and probably the beginning of March, the condition of the soil will be explored on the section between Einhausen and Lampertheim-Neuschloß in the Bergstraße district with up to 40 meter deep boreholes, Deutsche Bahn announced on Monday. This should help to determine the exact route between Lorsch and Mannheim-Waldhof by the end of 2023.
The new ICE route is intended to relieve the current routes and at the same time ensure a faster connection between the regions around Frankfurt and Mannheim. The journey time between the main train stations in the two cities is to be reduced by around a quarter to just under half an hour. The basic route was already presented at the end of 2020, and a tunnel is planned in this area, among other things.
Dates for the start of construction and completion are not yet known, the construction alone will take five to six years according to Deutsche Bahn’s estimate.
