Kiel (dpa / lno) – Record champions THW Kiel celebrated a sovereign home win at the start of the season in the Handball Bundesliga. The North Germans prevailed on Sunday with 36:23 (17:11) against TVB Stuttgart. The hosts’ best thrower was Swedish newcomer Eric Johansson with six goals. Max Häfner and Patrick Zieker were each successful four times for the guests.
The TVB, who had strengthened their squad during the summer break with former national goalkeeper Silvio Heinevetter, kept up to a certain extent until the 7:7 (16th minute). After that, however, the team of THW coach Filip Jicha picked up the pace. Tomas Mrkva showed a good game in his league premiere for Kiel. The goalkeeper, who came from Bergisches HC, made 15 saves and scored one goal. However, Jicha did not want to overestimate the clear success: “You never know where you are at the beginning of the season,” said the 40-year-old Czech on Sky.
The Kielers continued their impressive series against TVB. For the THW it was the 15th victory in the 15th Bundesliga duel with the Swabians. On Wednesday (7:05 p.m. / Sky) the “Zebras” will continue with the first away game. The program includes the away trip to SC DHfK Leipzig, which botched its season premiere last Thursday with a 22:25 defeat at TSV Hannover-Burgdorf.
