Herzog and Funk win the World Cup final

La Seu d’Urgell (dpa) – The world champions Andrea Herzog and Ricarda Funk have won the canoe slalom world cup final in La Seu d’Urgell, Spain, in their disciplines.

The Olympic bronze medalist Herzog from Leipzig made a mistake at gate 20 in the canoe on the demanding course, but then took the full risk and was rewarded. She relegated the Czech Gabriela Satkova to second place with 0.06 seconds. The Czech Tereza Fiserova was third.

Augsburg’s Elena Lilik, who had previously failed in the kayak in the semifinals, touched a goal early and finished sixth. In return, she made it onto the podium in second place in the final extreme slalom competition. Victory went to Britain’s Mallory Franklin, bronze went to Spain ‘s Olatz Arregui.

“My feeling wasn’t as good as it was last time at the World Championships in Augsburg, and my run wasn’t perfect today either, but I’m all the more happy about the win,” said Herzog. Only Fiserova paddled flawlessly, even Olympic champion Jessica Fox from Australia made a mistake shortly before the finish line and only finished tenth.

Olympic champion Funk, on the other hand, remained clear in the kayak. The day before, the 30-year-old from KSV Bad Kreuznach relegated French Camille Prigent to second place. Third was Doria Vilarrubla from Andorra. “It was really a tough course, I’m really happy with my final run,” said Funk.

For the Canadian men, Lennard Tuchscherer and Timo Trummer clearly missed the final. The kayak specialists Stefan Hengst, Noah Hegge and Tim Bremer also failed prematurely.
