Minister demands basic funding for public transport

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) – Even after the decision of the Berlin traffic light coalition for a new local transport ticket, Baden-Württemberg’s Transport Minister Winfried Hermann calls for solid basic financing of local public transport. “A nationwide valid, simple and inexpensive ticket is good if at the same time the basic financing of public transport, the regionalization funds, are increased,” said the Green politician on Sunday of the German Press Agency in Stuttgart. “Otherwise we would lure passengers into a public transport service that has to be reduced due to drastic cost increases.”

The traffic light coalition of Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) had previously decided that the local transport ticket should aim for a price range of between 49 and 69 euros per month. The federal states still have to agree to the financing. The third support package for citizens is worth more than 65 billion euros – it is being launched in the face of rising prices.

“The federal and state governments will now jointly develop a concept for a nationwide ticket, that’s the right way,” Hermann continued. The design and costs will be negotiated. The Green politician had already pointed out the upcoming special conference of transport ministers, which is planned for September 19, before the traffic light decision was made.

Economics Minister Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut (CDU) welcomed the new relief package. “It’s high time for relief, because the pressure from the price increases is increasing,” she said, according to a statement. Now the measures, some of which are still vaguely formulated, must be specified quickly, she demanded.
