Timmendorfer Strand (dpa) – The favorites have prevailed at the German beach volleyball championships.
Hamburg’s Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler, seeded number one, secured the title with a 21:17, 21:12 against the Bavarian brothers Benedikt and Jonas Sagstetter. The women’s third-place finishers Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann had previously triumphed. In a Hamburg city duel, they defeated Sandra Ittlinger and Isabel Schneider from FC St. Pauli 25:23, 21:16. On Friday, the new title holders lost the first quarter-final against Ittlinger/Schneider.
Both Ehlers/Wickler and Müller/Tillmann are playing their first season together this year. It was the fifth title for the 27-year-old Wickler, the previous four he had won with Armin Dollinger (2015), Tim Holler (2017) and with his long-term partner Julius Thole (2018, 2020). Ehlers and Müller/Tillmann were able to be celebrated as champions for the first time.
Jonas Reinhardt/Milan Sievers came third with a three-set win against Max Just and Lui Wüst from Berlin. Olympic champion Kira Walkenhorst and her partner Anna-Lena Grüne clearly won the game for third place in the women’s game against Christina Aulenbrock/Sandra Ferger from VfL Osnabrück with 21:15, 21:15.
