Widespread investigations aim to clarify how former President Donald Trump directed this unprecedented violent demonstration and who his alleged aides were. For the American sociologists Philip S. Gorski and Samuel L. Perry, this act of violence represents the preliminary climax of a worrying development whose unforeseeable consequences they warn: The growing influence of a “white Christian nationalism” that they associate with Trump and his supporters.
