Aue (AP) – Helge Leonhardt has resigned as president of the third division football club FC Erzgebirge Aue. The 63-year-old announced this. He is taking responsibility for “the current sporting situation” of the professional team, which is far behind.
Leonhardt had been President of the FCE since September 2014 and had been able to keep the club in the 2nd Bundesliga for seven years. Two relegations fell during his tenure, the most recent last summer. The hoped-for restart with coach Timo Rost did not materialize, instead the club slipped deeper into the sporting crisis.
“I very much hope that an orderly new start can be made and that further escalations that would cause public damage to the club can be prevented,” said Leonhardt. “In no way do I go into malice or anger, I go out with level-headedness, with mature consideration, and with a warm heart.” For the club, the resignation is tantamount to a turning point, since Leonhardt was involved in all decisions and often set the tone.
