Berlin (dpa) – Timo Baumgartl is back in the starting XI of Union Berlin for the first time a little more than four months after his testicular cancer became known. Coach Urs Fischer set up the 26-year-old in the Bundesliga game against VfL Wolfsburg .
In May, the Köpenickers made Baumgartl’s illness known. After surgery and chemotherapy, the central defender returned to training in August. Last weekend he was back in the Bundesliga squad for the first time against 1. FC Köln.
He asked Baumgartl if he felt ready, Fischer said before the game at DAZN. “It’s time to throw him in,” said the Swiss. Fischer also brought captain Christopher Trimmel and Niko Gießelmann back into the starting eleven. In the second game after Max Kruse was sorted out, Wolfsburg coach Niko Kovac relies on the same team that clinched their first win of the season against Eintracht Frankfurt last matchday.
