Eisenach (dpa/th) – On the Autobahn 4 in the direction of Frankfurt near Eisenach, there was a fatal accident early on Sunday morning. Due to the extent of the accident shortly after the Eisenach Ost junction, the number of fatalities could not be quantified according to the police on Sunday afternoon. At around 1:00 a.m., a car drove into a truck at high speed, which was probably standing on the hard shoulder due to a breakdown. The car got stuck under the truck and immediately caught fire.
The 52-year-old truck driver was able to get out of his vehicle and tried to extinguish the flames with a fire extinguisher. “Due to the rapid spread of the flames, however, this was not possible. The car burned out completely,” said the police. The fire spread to the trailer and the load. According to the police, the fire brigade spent around an hour and a half trying to bring the fire under control. The car is still stuck under the semitrailer. “The rescue is still going on,” said the police spokesman. It is unclear how many people were in the completely burned-out car.
Since then, traffic has been diverted to the Frankfurt Ost junction, and the A4 was still closed in the morning. The salvage and cleaning work is expected to continue until midday.
