Göppingen (dpa) – The German champion SC Magdeburg has also won the fourth game in the handball Bundesliga despite a short break. Only three days after the 30:28 in the Champions League at Dinamo Bucharest, coach Bennet Wiegert’s team won 31:26 (15:14) at Frisch Auf Göppingen on Sunday. Omar Ingi Magnusson (7/1) and Daniel Pettersson (6 goals) were the best SCM shooters.
Despite the mega program with six games in just 14 days since the Bucharest game, Wiegert didn’t want to make any excuses. “The boys are looking forward to it, they don’t need to train with me, they just play,” he said with a smile on the Sky TV channel.
His team started a bit unfocused and only managed to take the first lead (4:3) in the ninth minute thanks to Philipp Weber, which the guests then extended to 6:3. Again it was the national player who threw out the first four-goal lead in the 25th minute at 13:9. But Göppingen fought back and, thanks to national left winger Marcel Schiller, scored to make it 12:13 and thanks to Tobias Ellebaek to equalize at 13:13, before Magnusson took the lead by 15:14 at half-time with a seamless shot.
After the change, the SCM drew back to three goals (17:14). Magnus Saugstrup then increased the lead to 23:18 (41st) with a backhand throw at the circle. Now the difference in quality became noticeable, Magdeburg punished every mistake made by the hosts: Pettersson scored to lead 25:18 (43rd). Despite being eight goals behind, Göppingen reduced the gap again with a 4-0 run, but the SCM didn’t let anything burn in the final minutes.
There was a moment of shock in the 56th minute when Gisli Kristjansson collapsed after an attacking situation and had to leave the floor with a suspected knee injury. After the end of the game, however, he was back with his team in the hall.
