In 2016, the Hamburg weekly newspaper Die Zeit named Ronny Graupe “Jazz Germany’s new super guitarist”. Even if this honorary title is a bit boulevard-like – it is not undeserved: In June 2021, Graupe received the German Jazz Prize, which was awarded for the first time and initiated by the federal government, in the guitar category. However, Graupe was already a great guitarist before 2016: the musician, who was born in Chemnitz in 1979, has been touring the stages of the world since the mid-1990s, and he has long had his place in Berlin’s illustrious jazz scene. And the super guitarist has also been a guest at jazz eV in Dachau, where great musicians from all over the jazz world are invited to great concerts: in 2017 and 2020 .
On Thursday, September 22nd, Ronny Graupe can be seen there again with his current quartet Off The Record . Its members include other “old acquaintances” of Jazz eV: Oli Steidle on drums and the Brit Phil Donkin on double bass, you could see them together there in 2018 with their avant-garde project Killing Popes ; Also present in Graupe’s new band: the Polish musician Dominik Bukowski on the vibraphone.
Graupe released more than a dozen albums as a band leader, and his new quartet’s first album was released on his own label in the spring, entitled “The Call”. “The compositions have been specially conceived for this ensemble and for this album,” he said. “It’s about dealing with existence.” This is particularly important in complicated times like these, “even if it should take 10,000 years”. You can’t blame the man for a lack of perseverance. Great guy.
The concert will take place on Thursday, September 22 at 8 p.m. in the Kulturschranne, doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are available from Ticketino, the relevant link can be found on jazzev.com .
