The week of Stefan Noelle

Stefan Noelle is a creative chameleon. For decades he has played drums in a wide variety of formations on the stages of the republic. As an attentive chronicler of everyday life, he sings about longing, sweets or even washing machines with his very own sense of humour. On September 23, his new, second album “How it pulls me” will be released, on which he brings together more than 35 colleagues. He’s actually really looking forward to the Oktoberfest, which he’ll probably have to ignore because of his many musical performances over the next few days.

Monday: Back to the beginning

My new album will be released on Friday, an important and big event for me. But as always in my life, the big and the small are very close together. They are interwoven and closely intertwined, above all through musical friendships. Of course, the big thing is still hovering over everything in Munich: the first Wiesn in three years. But I’d rather say it straight away: this week I’m not doing anything. Tonight I’ll be back on stage for the first time since October 2020 at “Blickpunkt Spot” in the Schwabing clubhouse . I tried out all my songs there, and I also had my very first performance as a songwriter on these boards. That was in November 2011, Hannes Ringlstetter moderated, like every Monday back then. A little evening that actually changed my life. Hannes is “big” today, the “small” clubhouse is still there, and I’m happy to see my songwriter colleague Christine Henkel and the moderator Julia von Miller there, among others.

Tuesday: From big to small

Celebrity tips for Munich and the region: How does an architect who stands for the big and spectacular work as a sculptor, on a small scale, just with iron and wood? This can be experienced in the exhibition "Beyond Hellas - Santiago Calatrava" in the Glyptothek.

In the morning I would like to look at the sculptures by Santiago Calatrava in the Glyptothek all by myself and in peace and quiet. How does an architect, who stands for the big and spectacular, work as a sculptor, on a small scale, only with iron and wood? In the evening, the astrophysicist Harald Lesch also talks about the biggest and the smallest in the Prinzregententheater, accompanied by my musical colleagues Quadro Nuevo . They recorded the song “Die eternity lies” with me, which questions this great idea of humanity in seven short episodes.

Wednesday: Intimate game

Promotion day! I meet my band in the studio of the BR-Abendschau, because tonight we’re going to present my new album there and play a song live. After that I would like to invite the boys to Ruffini in Neuhausen, my favorite café for many years. But I would also be interested in the duo Magali Sare/Manel Fortià in the Unterfahrt, because a duo with only voice and double bass is a “small”, intimate affair. I started something related 30 years ago together with my colleague Alex Haas. On one of my album songs, he brought his banjo, which he usually plucks for the wedding band. We’re also celebrating our anniversary as Our Favorites , but not until December.

Thursday: Master musical

In the morning the last band rehearsal for the upcoming concerts where we will present the new album. Then I just have to go to South Tyrol quickly to frame the finissage of the exhibition of the “Museum of Love” by Luise Loué in the Parkhotel Holzner in Soprabolzano with my love songs. The smallest and most private objects for the greatest feeling of all – love. That’s why I can’t manage to watch my friend Gil Mehmert’s production of ” Tootsie ” at Gärtnerplatz. We did three plays and a film together, including the legendary “Contract Killer” at the Metropoltheater and most recently “Oh, this gap”. He is a master of the big, sometimes very funny fireworks, which – no wonder – consists of countless small details that intertwine with virtuoso choreography.

Friday: Musical friendships

It’s today. My new album will be released digitally, you can listen , stream, download it. The physical album is a 32 x 32 centimeter music-poetry-photo book with 64 pages including CD and with more than 30 guests from “my” Munich scene, including Vera Klima, Wolfgang Schmid, Andrea Hermenau, Abathar Kmash, Hugo Siegmeth , with many pictures by the great photographer Lena Semmelroggen . It is my absolute heart project of the last few years. The studio video of “Die Eternity Lies” with Quadro Nuevo in the cast with Evelyn Huber on the harp is also out today. And one of the greats in Munich, my longtime friend Gerd Baumann, who of course is also on the record, is doing a very small reading tonight. “The Sheep of Pythagoras”, in the Glockenbach bookstore on Hans-Sachs-Strasse.

Saturday: drumming at colleagues

Today would be an option at the Oktoberfest, but then during the day in the Herzkasperl tent, where the Himpsl family plays, aka Unterbiberger Hofmusik. The brothers Xaver and Lugwig Himpsl are also on my new record. I myself am active in the evenings in the periphery, as a percussionist in the band of my Persian singer-songwriter colleague Arash Sasan in the Kulturetage Riem. So I can’t be there when my esteemed cabaret colleague Bumillo shows the preview of his program “Haushaltsloch” on another “peripheral” small stage that I really appreciate: in the ” Spagat ” in the Domagkviertel. They have excellent adult and children’s theater and, starting in October, a monthly concert of my neighborhood jazz series Be My Guest, which I’m curating now in its ninth season. I can only call out to the thousands who live in Riem and Schwabing-Nord: go to these venues in your area. They do it for you!

Sunday: Concert in Wessling

As is so often the case, this Sunday is also filled with work. We have postponed my concert in the Pfarrstadl Weßling three or four times in the last two and a half years, now it coincides with my release. The cultural initiative “Unser Dorf Weßling” enables one of the many small, often volunteer-run venues that are so immensely valuable for our kind. They ensure the broad cultural infrastructure without which there is no top. It’s similar in culture to sport. With my band mates Max Braun, Adrian Reiter and Nikolaus Reichel, I’m already making a run-up for the Munich release concert at the Lustspielhaus on Tuesday, September 27th. Then we’ll really celebrate the album, with friends, participants and a few surprise guests, so: big!

Stefan Noelle is one of the busiest heads of the Munich music scene. As a drummer, he is at home in jazz and world music, and since 2013 he has also been the host of his jazz series “Be My Guest”. He composes and performs theater music, most recently in the “Lücke” at the Metropoltheater or with the actress Jutta Speidel at the Komödie im Bayerischen Hof in Munich. As a singer-songwriter, he released his second album “Wie es mich Segel” on September 23 with more than 30 guests from the Munich scene.
