Magdeburg (AP) – Antonio Di Salvo is looking forward to two top-class international matches for his one-year anniversary as head coach of the German U21 national soccer team.
“After successfully qualifying for the European Championship, we want to use the international matches to measure ourselves against the best. France and England are just right for that,” said Di Salvo, who succeeded Stefan Kuntz a year ago. As his assistant coach, Di Salvo played a key role in successes such as the European Championship titles in 2017 and 2021.
“We played a confident qualification and I would like to see our squad against top opponents so that we as a coaching team know what our level of performance is. We’re really looking forward to the games,” said the 43-year-old. “The second year will be important again and this is our second year with this team.”
The U21s will start the European Championship season with friendlies against France on Friday (6.15 p.m./ProSiebenMaxx) in Magdeburg and against England on Tuesday (8.45 p.m./ProSiebenMaxx) in Sheffield. The finals of the European Championship will take place from June 9th to July 2nd, 2023 in Romania and Georgia. Germany has qualified for it confidently.
