Olympic champion van Vleuten suffers a broken elbow

Wollongong (AP) – Olympic cycling champion Annemiek van Vleuten broke her elbow in a fall at the World Championships in Wollongong, Australia. The 39-year-old announced this in the short message service Twitter.

“Stable elbow fracture, no surgery required. I’m allowed to ride a bike, but that depends on the pain and has to be reasonable. Hope I can sleep,” wrote the Dutchwoman after she was hospitalized for treatment. This means that a start for the three-time world champion in the individual race on Saturday is questionable.

Van Vleuten apparently fell in the team mixed time trial shortly after the start due to a technical defect. “I don’t know what happened but it looks like the tire blew out after I hit the roadside, so that wasn’t the problem. Something was throwing me off balance, but whatever caused it : It won’t help or change my situation,” the cycling star tweeted.
