Mainz (dpa / lrs) – An emergency call due to eye and respiratory irritation in residents of a residential complex in the upper town of Mainz caused a large-scale operation by the fire brigade on Wednesday evening. The fire brigade announced that 7 of the 18 slightly injured were children. Two of them are small children under the age of one year, said a spokesman for the Mainz fire brigade in the evening. A child was taken to a hospital for outpatient care.
The fire brigade was called to the scene shortly after 8 p.m. because of an unclear chemical odor after a family complained about eye and respiratory irritation. According to the spokesman, the measurements taken by the emergency services initially gave no indication of a hazard. In the course of the operation, however, other residents reported the same symptoms. According to the fire brigade, experts from the municipal utility who were called in did not find any special features in the sewers. A total of 50 emergency services were on site. Those affected were able to return to their homes after about two hours.
