"We don't compromise"

Moldovan President Maia Sandu tells how she intends to keep her country on course towards Europe and counteract the threat posed by big neighbor Russia – which already has one foot in the country in Transnistria.

The economist Maia Sandu , who studied in the USA and has worked at the World Bank, among other things, has been President of the Republic of Moldova since December 2020. Sandu, who wants to lead the country into the EU, is in Berlin this week to talk about the consequences of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which also poses an acute threat to Moldova. Moscow has troops stationed in the separatist region of Transnistria in the east of the small country sandwiched between Romania and Ukraine, and Moldova is almost entirely dependent on Russian gas. While Sandu is asking for support in the West, the pro-Russian opposition is already mobilizing.
