Climate protests by Fridays For Future also in MV

Schwerin / Berlin (dpa / mv) – According to the police, more than 1,300 people followed the Fridays For Future movement’s call for a global “climate strike” on Friday in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. According to the information, the largest demonstrations were in Rostock with around 580 and in Greifswald with around 400 participants. In many cases, the mostly young demonstrators were also joined by pensioners and families.

In the early afternoon in Schwerin, more than 200 participants protested against the further use of coal for energy production and called for a consistent shift towards renewable sources such as sun and wind. It is still not too late to counteract the rapidly progressing global warming. But the lever must now finally be resolutely thrown, emphasized the co-organizer of the Schwerin protest action, Liv Nachtigall.

According to the police, there were similar actions on Friday in the north-east in Wismar, Stralsund, Waren and Neustrelitz. Protests were planned in more than 270 cities across Germany. The call for demonstrations was supported by many nature and environmental protection associations. It was the Fridays For Future movement’s eleventh call for a global day of protest since its inception in 2018.

“The climate crisis has arrived on our doorstep,” said Liv Nachtigall, blaming the state and federal governments for the developments. “Instead of pushing ahead with the energy transition, it was better to put honey on Putin’s lips,” she said, referring to the controversial construction of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 Baltic gas pipelines. In the meantime, several crises are superimposed, and the pressure to act has increased further. “The time for excuses is over,” exclaimed Nightingale to the applause of the demonstrators. She underpinned the movement’s demand for a state special fund of 100 billion euros in order to accelerate the energy transition and implement inexpensive local public transport throughout Germany.

Nachtigall resolutely protested against the infiltration of the protest action by, as she said, Schurbler. Several men briefly unfurled a banner criticizing the Greens’ environmental policies.
