ECA boss on Supercup in the USA: Nothing decided

Istanbul (dpa) – The representatives of the influential club association ECA have not fundamentally ruled out a reform of the UEFA Super Cup with games in the USA.

“What we are trying to do is to help our competitions grow and develop,” said ECA President Nasser Al-Khelaifi after the association’s General Assembly in Istanbul. The 48-year-old is President of the French top club Paris Saint-Germain and sits on the Executive Committee of the European Football Union.

British news agency PA had reported on talks within UEFA aimed at reforming the game between Champions League winners and Europa League winners. Together with the winner of the still very new Conference League, the two European champions could play against the champions of Major League Soccer (MLS) in a four-man tournament in the USA from 2024, it was said. The USA continues to be regarded as a growth market for football . Eintracht Frankfurt lost this year’s Supercup against Real Madrid (0:2).

“We didn’t specifically discuss America, we didn’t decide anything,” said Al-Khelaifi. Many things are being thought about, “different ideas” are being explored and tested. “But I can’t confirm anything for today,” said Al-Khelaifi. “But why shouldn’t we look at all the opportunities we have to grow our clubs and our competitions?”
