What about childcare?

The new kindergarten year has begun, which means stress for many parents. The situation is tense for various reasons. The need for childcare places is increasing, and some facilities have been struggling with the shortage of skilled workers for years. Most recently, the Bavarian Ministry of Social Affairs even advised day-care providers to allow larger groups of less qualified staff.

How is the situation in the Five Lakes Region? How many childcare places are there in the cities and municipalities? Does this meet the need? Or are there even waiting lists? An overview.

Starnberg

Childcare places in crèches: 222 places.

Childcare places in kindergartens: 856 places.

Children on waiting lists: 60 children.

In Starnberg, the care situation is tense. This is also due to the fact that four positions for educators are currently vacant, the city is struggling with the shortage of skilled workers. In the summer, the city council launched a package of measures intended to counteract the development. Among other things, a group of volunteers is planned to compensate for short-term staff shortages. The city is also trying to make the profession itself more attractive. For example, positions of employees who take parental leave will be filled indefinitely in the future. However, the city is bound by legal requirements, so the measures must not result in any monetary benefit.

Gauting

Child care places in crèches: 174 places.

Childcare places in kindergartens: 766 places.

Children on waiting lists: 162 children.

Far more than 1000 childcare places in various facilities – and it’s still not enough. This has been the situation in Gauting for many years. If the inauguration of a daycare center is celebrated, you can start planning the next one, Mayor Brigitte Kössinger (CSU) once said. Preparations are currently underway for a new building near the school center on the outskirts. A larger kindergarten with several groups could be built there. But first they want to find out in the town hall what is actually possible there and what the parents’ wishes are.

Krailling

Child care places in crèches: 101 places.

Childcare places in kindergartens: 359 places.

Children on waiting lists: 50 children.

A total of almost 600 childcare places are available in crèches, kindergartens and after-school care centers in Krailling, but the demand is greater than this supply. The municipality itself does not operate any day care centers, but leaves this task to providers such as the Red Cross, Caritas or the churches. According to its own statements, the municipality is “in first place in the Starnberg district ” when it comes to the range of care services. The spectrum ranges from the small Montessori kindergarten founded by a parent initiative to the large Caritas children’s home with numerous groups.

Gilching

Child care places in crèches: 204 places.

Childcare places in kindergartens: 743 places.

Children on waiting lists: 40 children.

According to the town hall, one group cannot be opened due to a lack of staff in the municipal kindergarten “Waldstraße” and in the municipal children’s house “Schatzkiste”. There are some vacancies there, but the situation has been worse: Because of the constant influx into the community in recent years, there have sometimes been 50 to 70 children on waiting lists. “But our goal is to accommodate all children,” says Mayor Manfred Walter (SPD).

Mountain

Child care places in crèches: 58 places.

Childcare places in kindergartens: 272 places.

Children on waiting lists: 31 children.

“The situation is unsatisfactory,” says Berg’s mayor Rupert Steigenberger. Not only is there a lack of space, there is also a lack of space. The crèche area is particularly affected. The municipality wants to get this under control temporarily with container solutions. As far as the kindergarten situation is concerned, there is a lack of places – but it is up to the staff here. In the Catholic kindergarten in Aufkirchen, for example, the shortage of staff is already almost chronic. The result: Eleven children are on the waiting list in the Berger kindergartens. Steigenberger’s conclusion: “The search for personnel continues.”

Diessen

Child care places in crèches: 83 places.

Childcare places in kindergartens: 301 places.

Children on waiting lists: 19 children.

For years there has been a lack of childcare facilities in the community. For this reason, the municipal facility in Dettenschwang was expanded by autumn 2021 and a temporary container was built at the Riederau children’s home, which is to be replaced by a permanent wooden modular building. In addition, a mini-daycare center is planned in the former town hall of Riederau, as well as an after-school care center on communal property at the elementary school. In addition to the two municipal day-care centers, there are four other providers in Dießen, and the shortage of staff is great everywhere: there are currently twelve crèche places missing because one group in the SOS Children’s Village cannot operate due to a lack of staff.

Schondorf

Child care places in crèches: 30 places.

Childcare places in kindergartens: 116 places.

Children on waiting lists: 5 children.

In Schondorf, an interim crèche is set up in containers and the construction of another day-care center is planned. Mayor Alexander Herrmann saw the community faced with an unexpectedly high demand, as many families had moved to Schondorf in the past two years. “With difficulty” emergency places are kept free for this kindergarten year, guest children can no longer be accommodated, says Herrmann. The containers for the interim crèche should be ready in the first quarter of 2023. By rearranging the groups, both new kindergarten places and more crèche places will then be offered.

utting

Child care places in crèches: 42 places.

Childcare places in kindergartens: 163 places.

Children on waiting lists: 28 children.

“There aren’t enough places,” says Mayor Florian Hoffmann. The municipality is currently having a needs analysis carried out, but Hoffmann suspects that another children’s home will be necessary. The community has outsourced the care facilities to various providers. By the end of the year, the Catholic day-care center “Haus für Kinder” will be moving out of the containers on Jahnstraße and into the renovated buildings on Ludwigshöhe, including the outsourced crèche group in the former VR building. An apartment there will then be converted so that by Easter 2023 a new facility with a kindergarten and a crèche group will be built.

andechs

Child care places in crèches: 31 places.

Childcare places in kindergartens: 232 places.

Children on waiting lists: 7 children.

There are a total of seven childcare facilities in the five districts of the 4,000-inhabitant municipality of Andechs, and yet the influx of young families is pushing capacities to their limits. A precision landing, if you will, just about. “Currently it’s enough,” says treasurer Marlisa Schweiger. A day-care center still has two crèche places and two kindergarten places available, meanwhile seven children are waiting for a preferred kindergarten place and nine children for an after-school care place. This is not least due to the lack of staff. A total of five positions are currently advertised in the facilities, as management, educator, childcare worker and individual companion.

Tutzing

Child care places in crèches: 108 places.

Child care places in kindergartens: 360 places.

Children on waiting lists: 0 children.

Also in Tutzing , which due to its location by the lake is already limited in terms of population growth, the lack of staff is reducing the number of childcare options. In one facility, for example, there are nine free childcare places that cannot be filled due to a lack of educators. That’s why the facility closes an hour and a half earlier every day. This is symptomatic of a place where there is hardly any living space, let alone one that would be affordable for middle-income people. The result is unsatisfactory for the parents: As soon as a caregiver falls ill or changes, individual groups have to be closed.

inning

Child care places in crèches: 63 places.

Child care places in kindergartens: 200 places.

Children on waiting lists: 12 children.

In Inning, the need for care places can be covered to a large extent. Only twelve children are currently still waiting for a place. The shortage of skilled workers is also slightly noticeable here, but not as severe as in other communities. Only one part-time position in the Montessori kindergarten has not yet been filled. A recent addition was made here to meet the increased demand. Instead of 22, 50 children can now be cared for there.

sea field

Child care places in crèches: 76 places.

Childcare places in kindergartens: 311 places.

Children on waiting lists: 15 children.

The 311 kindergarten places in Seefeld only cover the need because three more children were accommodated in one of the kindergartens than the capacity actually provided for. And although all positions in the municipal kindergartens and crèches are occupied, a position has been advertised on the website of the town hall as a precaution. Cinderella Marinkovic, who also has a vacancy in her crèche, also confirms the difficulties in finding staff: “We’ve advertised the position for a long time, but nobody has answered.”

Wessling

Child care places in crèches: 48 places.

Child care places in kindergartens: 225 places.

Children on waiting lists: 0 children.

No waiting lists, all positions are filled and there are even still free day care places – that’s the good news for parents from the community of Weßling. And more places will be created. After the conversion of the “Villa Kunterbunt” children’s home, another kindergarten group can open. In the old fire station, rooms for the rainbow kindergarten are built. It took a lot of work to fill all the positions. The forest kindergarten in Grünsink, which opened in 2020, was even threatened with closure. “The team is complete again just in time for the start of the new daycare year,” says the town hall.

Woerthsee

Child care places in crèches: 36 places.

Childcare places in kindergartens: 183 places.

Children on waiting lists: 0 children.

The municipality of Wörthsee is not aware of any waiting lists, and there are apparently enough places for childcare – there may only be problems with short-term arrivals. But the shortage of skilled workers is also noticeable in Wörthsee. For example, the Bavarian Red Cross, which supports various facilities in the community, is currently looking for a part-time nanny and assistant.

Herrsching

Child care places in crèches: 105 places.

Childcare places in kindergartens: 307 places.

Children on waiting lists: 4 children.

There are waiting lists in Herrsching, but according to the municipality, there are usually only parents on these who have registered later, who are moving in during the year or who are waiting for a place in a specific facility. With the commissioning of the new building of the “Children’s Home at Fendlbach” in 2024, further capacities will be created. The shortage of skilled workers is also noticeable in Herrsching. At least four vacancies are currently known in the municipality. Tendering procedures have so far been unsuccessful.

Feldafing

Child care places in crèches: 30 places.

Child care places in kindergartens: 120 places.

Children on waiting lists: 2 children.

The BRK is responsible for childcare in Feldafing. According to BRK spokeswoman Karin Windorfer, there are a total of 60 after-school care places in the magic forest, 75 childcare places at the village sparrows and 45 in the Montessori facility. In addition, there are potentially 30 crèche places at the “Feldafinger Blümchen”. Although the shortage of staff at the village sparrows has been defused by hiring a new manager and the waiting list has been processed, 20 after-school care places and eight crèche places are currently not being offered due to a lack of staff. We are still looking for places for two crèche children. You have been registered late because the families have only recently moved here.

Pocking

Child care places in crèches: 25 places.

Child care places in kindergartens: 175 places.

Children on waiting lists: 0 children.

“We were able to accommodate all the children,” explains Anja Liebenthal, who is responsible for finances and childcare in the municipal administration. There are currently no children on the waiting list in either the kindergartens or crèches. Children who live in Pöcking are usually given preference, but strangers sometimes have to be turned away, she says. The staff shortage that the municipality still had in the spring has been remedied. However, according to Liebenthal, the situation can change quickly, for example if an employee is absent due to pregnancy. So far, the institutions have always been able to help each other out.
