Bierhoff sticks to World Cup goals: "All winners"

Leipzig (dpa) – DFB director Oliver Bierhoff is not moving away from the title goal at the upcoming World Cup in Qatar even after the sobering 0: 1 of the German national team against Hungary .

“The goal remains. Of course, you’ll say after this game, how can you say that. But we’re also starting from scratch in the tournament,” said Bierhoff after the first defeat of the DFB team under national coach Hansi Flick on Friday evening Leipzig.

Bierhoff assured him in the Leipzig Arena that his confidence in the national players was unbroken. “They are all competitive players, all winners. They have won a lot with their clubs, they all have ambitions. In this respect, you dream that anything is possible in a tournament like this,” said the 54-year-old.

The national team meets Japan (November 23), Spain (November 27) and Costa Rica (December 1) in the World Cup preliminary group.

Bierhoff expects an increase in performance from the DFB players in the final group game in the Nations League next Monday in the A-League relegated England as well as in the coming weeks in the clubs. “It was also important to realize that you have to have a top attitude. Certainly even more so towards Qatar, because you can’t bring these tactical things into play. The mentality and the will, the aggressiveness that you bring to the pitch will count all the more.” said Bierhoff.
